The days of the coronavirus pandemic are numbered – thanks to upcoming vaccines that have so far proven effective against the virus, Dr Anthony Fauci predicted Thursday.
“Certainly it won’t be a pandemic for much longer because I think vaccines will turn the tide,” Fauci said at a virtual health conference hosted by London think tank Chatham House.
Still, the nation’s top infectious disease expert has warned the new coronavirus is likely to stick around.
“I doubt we can eradicate this,” he said. “I think we have to anticipate that this is something that we might need to stay in control chronically. It may be something that is becoming rampant and that we just need to be careful about.
Biopharmaceutical companies around the world have battled to develop safe and effective vaccines against COVID-19. Earlier this week, Pfizer and BioNTech announced that their candidate was over 90% effective in an advanced stage study.
Moderna also said on Wednesday that he had enough data to assess the effectiveness of his shot. The company did not say when the results would be released, but Fauci said on the same day that it could be soon.
