Here are updates on coronavirus cases in Brevard, according to the Florida Department of Health, as of August 16, 2020.
Brevard has recorded four new deaths and 33 new cases of COVID-19, according to data from the Florida Department of Health on Sunday.
In total, the number of Brevard cases was 6,511 (6,490 residents and 21 non-residents affected). So far, the county has lost 178 people to the virus and 64 of those deaths were reported this month (see case overview below). The victims were between 40 and 103 years old. At least 109 of those deaths were linked to long-term care facilities such as nursing homes.
It is important to note that the exact dates of these deaths are not made public by the Department of Health; these people are unlikely to have died in 16 days. There is often a time lag between the person’s death and when it is reported by the Florida Department of Health. Additionally, a “case” is someone who tests positive for the first time, according to FDOH.

Here is information on the last four deaths reported to Brevard:
• a 77-year-old man whose case was not related to travel. It is not known if he had contact with another known case. His case was first registered by the state on August 3.
• a 76-year-old man whose case was not related to travel. It is not known if he had contact with another known case. His case was first registered by the state on August 7.
• a 90-year-old woman whose case was not related to travel. She had contact with another known case. His case was first registered by the state on August 7.
• an 85-year-old man whose case was not related to travel. He had contact with another known case. His case was first registered by the state on August 8.

A total of 87,048 coronavirus tests have been carried out in Brevard since the start of the pandemic. Of these, 6,511 tested positive and 80,480 tested negative. The overall positive rate rose to 7.48%.
On August 15, of 559 test results reported to Brevard, 527 were negative and 32 were positive for a positive percentage of 5.7%.
The median age of people who test positive for Brevard is 43, compared to 40 statewide. So far, 3,004 men have been diagnosed with COVID-19 and 3,476 women.
FDOH data shows that 534 Florida residents have been hospitalized in Brevard since the start of the pandemic, an increase of three from the previous day.
According to the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration, as of 12:20 p.m. Sunday, Brevard had 105 people hospitalized for COVID-19 at its seven major hospitals, down 10 from the previous day. The AHCA data also shows 33% of available capacity in the 1,320 hospital beds of these hospitals and 27.2% of the 169 available intensive care hospital beds.
State statistics
The state added 3,779 new cases on Sunday. In total, the state recorded 573,416 cases, of which 567,375 affected residents and 6,041 non-residents. The percentage of people who tested positive remained unchanged at 13.53%. Sunday marked the 21st day in a row the state has reported fewer than 10,000 new cases, and on the first day of this month, the state has reported fewer than 4,000 new cases.
Statewide, 107 new deaths have been recorded, bringing the total number of deaths to 9,452. The state has recorded 267 new hospitalizations, bringing the total number of Florida residents hospitalized since the start of the pandemic at 33,928.
Overall, FDOH data shows that 4,239,309 have been tested statewide; 573,416 were positive and 3,659,212 tested negative for the coronavirus.
