NEW YORK CITY (WABC) – Appointments have been made well as new COVID-19 vaccination sites open around New York City, but distribution is only part of the battle.

The need for these vaccines grows daily as New York reports a total of 32,725 coronavirus deaths since the start of the pandemic, 1.2 million people have tested positive, and the current positivity rate is well over 5% .

On Saturday, 500 seniors were vaccinated at NYCHA complexes.

And yet another vaccination site opens Sunday at the Abyssinian Church in Harlem at noon.

Doses were also supposed to be available at the Brooklyn Army Terminal, one of the city’s five 24-hour mega sites last week, but the site closed and the doors were locked on Friday.

People with appointments were turned down, while other appointments were canceled because there were not enough vaccines. The city says it is asking state and federal authorities to get there as quickly as possible.

The state only receives a few hundred thousand doses, with millions now eligible.

Governor Andrew Cuomo believes that it will be until April before the vaccine reaches critical mass.
