Humboldt County Joint Information Center press release:

Routine staff testing led to the discovery of COVID-19 cases at the Granada Rehabilitation and Welfare Center in Eureka. Thirty people at the facility have tested positive, including one staff member and 29 residents.

Qualified nursing facilities and other long-term care facilities are required by the state to test all staff on a weekly basis. A positive result from these routine tests activates a set of responses described by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH).

Following the initial positive result from the latest round of routine testing, Humboldt County Public Health has extended testing this week to every person in the facility, which has so far revealed 29 additional cases among residents. Infection control experts from public health and the CRPD are helping the facility contain the outbreak, including on-site support. Public Health will provide ongoing testing to all staff and residents and additional expertise as needed.

Dr Josh Ennis, deputy director of health for Humboldt County, said this outbreak demonstrates the difficulty of protecting vulnerable people from COVID infection once community transmission is so widespread.

“We have a level of disease circulating right now that compromises our ability to maintain our hospital beds and ultimately protect the vulnerable,” he said.

“These residents are beloved members of the community, the family of someone you may know, often deeply rooted in Humboldt, and our thoughts are with them at this time,” said Dr Ennis. “It’s time for all of us to step up and relate our daily actions to real life consequences. Mask, walk away, wash your hands and do not gather.

Grenada administrators are following recommended containment strategies and are working closely with public health and the CDPH to closely monitor the health of residents.
