Unvaccinated young people who die from COVID-19 say they wish they had received the coronavirus vaccine, according to an Alabama doctor.
Dr Brytney Cobia, who works at Birmingham’s Grandview Medical Center, made the claim in a devastating Facebook post posted on Sunday and shared more than 700 times.
“I admit healthy young people with very serious COVID infections to the hospital. One of the last things they do before they are intubated is begging me for the vaccine. I hold their hand and tell them I’m sorry, but it’s too late, ”Cobia wrote.
“A few days later, when I call the time of death, I hug their family members and tell them that the best way to honor their loved one is to go get the shot and encourage everyone they know to do the same. ”

Cobia went on to explain that many families of the victims say they were not vaccinated because they believed COVID-19 was a “hoax” or “policy.”
‘They cry … They wish they could go back. But they can’t, ”Cobia continued.
“So they thank me and they will get the vaccine. And I go back to my office, I write their obituaries and I say a little prayer that this loss will save more lives ”.
Only 33.7% of Alabama residents are fully immunized – the lowest percentage of any US state.
Cases across the state have increased in recent weeks as the Delta variant of the coronavirus spreads rapidly.
The Alabama Department of Public Health has reported 7,915 new COVID infections in the past 14 days, with 469 patients requiring hospitalization.
According to the WSFA, 96% of people who have died from COVID since April 1 were not fully vaccinated.

‘Dr. Cobia, thank you for everything you do! My son said, “This is not a hoax” just before he was intubated. 50 days later, he died at 28. My heart has been completely broken ever since! ‘ mom wrote.
“My daughter and I have also had Covid and have been on oxygen since the day I was admitted on March 12. I finally got the green light to get vaccinated! So our appt can’t get here fast enough! I still cry when I have to find a bed for Covid patients when I am admitted. Especially when you go from the first floor to the ICU. I relive the nightmare of all parents! So yes, continue your mission that God has entrusted to you and I will do the same! One more life saved is one less life lost! ‘
Meanwhile, Cobia told local media that many Alabama residents were ignoring her calls for a shot.
She said she feared the next school year could be a disaster statewide.
“All of these children are about to go back to school. No mask warrant is in place, 70% of Alabama is unvaccinated. Cobia told AL.com.
“So that looks like a looming disaster, basically. ”
