Crestwood may be the Chargers, but host Melvindale spent the second half getting back into the game on Wednesday night in a well-played and fierce battle of the Western Wayne Athletic Conference.
After the Chargers took a 3-0 lead, the Cardinals scored twice in the second half to come close to a goal and continued to put serious pressure on the visitors’ side of the field.
But with 9:13 remaining in the game, Hamza Alyasari unleashed a single volley into the air and hit a rocket in the back of Melvindale’s net to push Crestwood ahead at 4-2.
Alyasari’s goal certainly blew the air out of the building for the home side and sent him running down midfield in a well-deserved celebratory sprint. That ultimately ended the Cardinals’ return attempt, as the Chargers held on for the 4-2 victory.
Overall, the coaches were busy throughout the game as both teams played hard (but cleanly) in a game that featured end-to-end action all night long.
With 16:41 left in the first half, Crestwood (5-6-1, 3-0 WWAC) got a penalty and Jad Farhat scored the game’s first goal. Melvindale junior goalie Saleh Alyazedy dove to his right and Farhat went the other way to give the Chargers a 1-0 lead over the Cards (3-6-1, 2-1 WWAC).
With 5:34 left in the first half, Crestwood’s Ali Karaali placed a corner just in front of the goal and teammate Belal Beydoun threw it into the net to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.
With 1 minute to go, Melvindale’s Jared Gonzalez hit an excellent ball from about 20 yards that narrowly missed the far post.
Crestwood led 2-0 at halftime.
The Chargers took a 3-0 lead early in the second half on a goal from Alyasari.
Melvindale entered the board after a few highly avoided hiccups early in the second half.
With 33:38 to go in the game, Alharith Munassar hit a corner in the back of the net and the Cards were in business.
Melvindale continued to press and the pressure earned them a penalty with 18:19 to go. Senior Anis Majid buried the shot in the right corner to help the home side come close to a 3-2 goal.
Crestwood goalkeeper Zayn Reda had a solid game and not only made great saves but also made good decisions, coming out of goal at the right time and staying home when it was the right choice.
Additionally, Alyazedy made some big saves throughout the contest to keep the cards in the game.
Both teams are expected to resume action on Monday, September 20, and each team will be home that night to face a conference opponent. The Chargers will face Redford Thurston and Melvindale will face Garden City.
