Crestwood hosted Western Wayne Athletic Conference rival Melvindale on Friday night for their annual comeback game.
In the last two meetings between these teams, Crestwood had beaten Melvindale in double digits. This year was no different as the Chargers won an unbalanced 43-8 victory and beat the Cardinals for the third year in a row.
With the victory, Crestwood (3-2, 3-1 WWAC) moved up to second place with Melvindale (3-2, 3-1 WWAC), who entered the game undefeated in the conference.
For the Chargers, it was their first win on the field this season, as the two previous wins have ended in a forfeit against Romulus and Annapolis.
“It was amazing how these kids played,” said Crestwood coach Jamal Al. “I’m so proud of each of them, of what they did and the way they did. did.
“They had a great week of training, they prepared well. They came back from a tough defeat last week in RU. [We] made all the corrections we needed to make and it showed in the field today.
The Cards struggled from the start and failed to find a rhythm in attack. After forcing a Chargers fumble early in the first quarter, Melvindale immediately escaped with his own fumble. From there, Crestwood took control of the game, feeding off his large homecoming crowd, and never looked back.
Mohamed Hakim recovered the fumble and ran for a touchdown at 9:58 of the first quarter. The extra point attempt failed and the Crestwoods led 6-0.
Two minutes later, quarterback Zain Abdallah rushed for a touchdown. The Chargers took a 14-0 lead after Abdallah joined Hussein Nasser in the 2-point conversion.
Tronice Hammond has been a wrecking ball all night in the Chargers’ backfield. In a first and goal game, the senior running back rushed for a touchdown near the four-minute mark. Hammond finished with three touchdowns on the night.
“When you have a kid like Tron ‘it’s not hard to train,” Al said. “This kid comes in and plays 110%. It doesn’t matter which side of the ball it is on. I had the pleasure of training him for four years.
Crestwood won 28-0 in the second quarter thanks to a touchdown from Hammond and an extra point from kicker Jawad Noureddine.
Around the seven-minute mark of the quarter, Abdallah found Ali Salami on a short completion that turned into 77 yards on the sidelines for another touchdown and the home team took a 35-0 lead at the half time.
Early in the third quarter, Curtis Jackson of Melvindale intercepted a pass near midfielder and sent it 14 yards into Crestwood territory.
With the cards set up at the Chargers’ 32, Crestwood’s Ali Elkadri had an assist.
Soon after, Hammond rushed 65 yards onto the field for his third touchdown of the competition. A 2-point conversion pass was completed by Abdallah at Hakim and topped the Chargers’ score on Friday night.
In the fourth quarter, the Cards managed to climb the board when running back Jordan Jablonski rushed to score the team’s only score. Quarterback Johnny Ford completed a 2-point conversion pass to Donnie Barnahart.
Both teams will be back in action next Friday, with Crestwood due to visit Robichaud and Melvindale scheduled for a trip to Romulus.
