RIGBY, Idaho (KIFI) – UPDATE 3:15 p.m. Crews were called back to 452N 3950E for a house fire that rekindled Friday morning around 5:00 a.m.
Firefighters discovered a heavy fire in the attic and downstairs, and the fire had burned enough to blow up a large picture window which supplied the fire with more air / oxygen.
Fire crews had to work through heavy slatted and plastered walls. There were several inches of insulation blown into the ceiling which hampered efforts to reach the hearth of the fire.
The original structure of this house was built around 1914 and the main structure of the house consisted of large squared timber with plaster slits. This makes it extremely difficult as the fire penetrates between these layers and burns from the inside out.
The teams worked several hours to extinguish this fire.
Central Fire District said firefighters never like to be called in to relight; however, when there is a well-built old house with this type of structure and with periodic renovations, it unfortunately happens.
The damage caused by the fire was considered a total loss. The damage estimate with the contents is $ 175,000 to $ 225,000.
