Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser faced intense media backlash after flouting her own mask tenure over the weekend.
On Sunday, photos emerged of the Democratic mayor celebrating a wedding without a mask. Additional photos also showed Bowser without a mask along with hundreds of other wedding guests at The Line DC hotel in the district’s Adams Morgan neighborhood, the Washington Examiner first reported.
The event came after the mayor issued an order that reinstated that anyone over the age of 2, regardless of their immunization status, is required to wear a mask indoors. The order went into effect at 5 a.m. on Saturday. However, the order clarified that the mandate does not apply to members of the “federal government or the legislative branch of the district government while such persons are in service.”

Nonetheless, Bowser received a lot of outrage online after being found breaking her own strict rules.
Reason editor-in-chief Robby Soave tweeted the news in a thread with the comment “Muriel Bowswer should step down immediately.”
Citizen Data CEO Mindy Finn also wrote: “A decision maker who acts like the rules don’t make sense invites anarchy. I have defended Muriel Bowser in the past, but her personal disregard for the Order of the Masks shows her a failed leader.
Earlier in the weekend, Bowser was also criticized from photos showing her celebrating her birthday on Friday without a mask alongside comedian Dave Chapelle hours before her tenure was enacted.
DC Examiner reporter Jerry Dunleavy wrote on Saturday “perhaps an answer to the question as to why DC’s mask tenure only came into effect this morning.”

Various other city and state leaders have also planned to reinstate strict mask mandates following recommendations from the CDC. Meanwhile, several Republican governors have announced they will oppose the issuance of any mask warrants for their states.
