A Camden County man died from West Nile virus in July, county officials said.

The man, who was in his 60s and unidentified, was admitted to a hospital with symptoms of the virus on July 16. He was returned to a subacute care center, where he later died, county officials said.

Although unusual, West Nile virus is not unheard of in New Jersey. About 80% of sick people will not develop any symptoms, and only one in 50 infected people will become seriously ill.

“West Nile virus typically affects a small number of New Jersey residents each year, but the prevalence of the virus has recently increased,” Camden County health officer Dr Paschal Nwako said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim and her family. The Camden County Department of Health continues to work with the Mosquito Commission to ensure that additional sprays and testing are done in the area. “

Symptoms of West Nile virus include fever, headache, and neurological dysfunction.

The best way to avoid West Nile virus is to limit the conditions in which mosquitoes breed, such as standing water, and to wear an EPA approved insect repellant.
