Havana (AP) – The Cuban government confirmed on Sunday that nine of the Cuban national team’s 24 players at the Under-23 Baseball World Cup had dropped out at a tournament in Mexico.
Cuban officials called the player’s behavior a “sneaky abandonment” in a memo released by the island’s official agency, Web Portal JIT.
The institute did not identify any athlete who remained in Mexico.
The nine-player asylum is one of the biggest losses of its kind suffered by Cuban teams playing abroad. Cuban baseball players are often hired by scouts trying to recruit them to play at Major League Baseball clubs, and strained relations between the United States and Cuba hamper their regular hiring process.
In 2018, the Caribbean countries signed an agreement on the normalization of major league sports and baseball relations, which was quickly revoked by the Trump administration.
Cuba closed part of the Under-23 tournament on Saturday and lost to Colombia in a bronze medal game. The Under-23 World Cup took place in Sonora, in northern Mexico.
