Hoerner Receives ‘Good News’, But Injury Rehabilitation Still Delayed originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago
The Bear cubs and infielder Nico Horner received what manager David Ross called “good news” after Hoerner left an injury rehab game in the middle of a batting Sunday.
Hoerner has not yet suffered a right slant injury, the Cubs announced on Monday. He needs to rest for a few days before resuming his baseball activities later this week. Ross said he hopes Hoerner can resume his rehabilitation mission in a week or two.
Hoerner has been on the injured list for three and a half weeks with a right oblique strain. He began a rehab mission with Single-A South Bend on Sunday, originally scheduled to move to Triple-A Iowa when the I-Cubs returned from their road trip.
“Smart move,” Ross said of Hoerner who pulled out of Sunday’s game when he felt tension in his oblique. “I had an oblique injury early in my career, and that’s one of those things until she’s completely healed, you don’t really know until you go out and play. He was smart.
Hoerner’s time on the pitch this season has been limited by three separate stints in IL. He’s only played 39 games and slashed .313 / .388 / .388, on course for career best batting average and base percentage records.
Ross said he suspected the positive results of Hoerner’s assessment on Monday helped ease some of the frustration the infielder may be feeling over his delayed rehabilitation.
“His heart wants to be on this court,” Ross said.
