Andrew Cuomo, governor of besieged New York City, received widespread mockery after claiming in CNN and MSNBC interviews that “an incompetent government” was responsible for the COVID deaths in his state.
Cuomo first made the claim in a friendly interview with MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace on Tuesday, insisting that former President Donald Trump and an incompetent federal response were to blame. Critics quickly took notice and asked if Cuomo’s decision to allow COVID-positive patients in nursing homes could have been a factor as well.

“This state, I’m very proud of what New Yorkers have done, because they came together. We were ambushed like no other state, Nicolle, and again, it was federal incompetence, ”Cuomo said.
“An incompetent government is killing people. More people have died than it takes to die in COVID. It’s the truth.”
As Cuomo tried to blame the Trump administration, his comment was quickly ridiculed on social media, as many people pointed out that many coronavirus-related deaths in New York City occurred after the controversial decision of the State of March 2020 to issue a directive requiring nursing care. homes to accommodate COVID-positive patients discharged from hospitals.
The directive was overturned in May, when Cuomo said hospitals could not refer patients to nursing homes unless they tested negative. In the months that followed, Cuomo steadily took hold of the decision, though he largely received a pass from CNN and MSNBC.
By the end of the summer, there were 6,600 deaths occurring on nursing home properties, as reported by the Associated Press. Fox News’s Janice Dean, who has openly criticized Cuomo’s response to the pandemic after her in-laws died from the virus at their separate elderly care facilities in New York City, criticized the governor for his lack of awareness of self.

Later Tuesday, Cuomo appeared on Liberal CNN, the network that is home to his little brother, Chris Cuomo, and repeated the same talking point about the murder of people by an “incompetent government.”
“Look, an incompetent government can kill people, it’s no joke, and more people have died here than necessary,” Cuomo told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer.

Cuomo likely noticed the widespread criticism, as he became more specific and specifically named Trump when he joined MSNBC’s Stephanie Ruhle on Wednesday morning to discuss plans to speed up the distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine in New York City.
“The Trump administration announced the eligibility, 65 and over, so you take a state like New York, that is, seven million people are eligible for the vaccine, over 65, workers from health, essential workers, etc. Seven million people. We received 250,000 people. doses per week, ”Cuomo said. “So they built a huge supply and demand debacle.”
Ruhle then asked how long it would take to vaccinate the entire Empire State if supply wasn’t an issue. Cuomo again criticized the Trump administration, saying the former president did not order enough doses in the first place.
None of the interviewers asked Cuomo about the nursing home’s decision or dismissed Cuomo’s account of blaming the Trump administration.
Cuomo became a liberal media hero during the pandemic, and he’s even written a book and won an Emmy award since his coronavirus ravaged his condition. Last year, the Cuomo siblings came under frequent criticism when the governor appeared regularly on his little brother’s CNN show, but often joked and mocked instead of focusing on important issues related to the coronavirus.

Cuomo’s friendly treatment has been a stark contrast to mainstream media coverage of Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who is often vilified for his state’s handling of the virus.
