Dallas County reports 2,590 coronavirus cases, 20 deaths; the state records deaths and hospitalizations

Dallas County reported 2,590 more coronavirus cases and 20 deaths on Thursday as hospitalizations for COVID-19 in the county were again at an all time high.

Statewide, hospitalizations hit a new high of 13,784, continuing a steady increase of several months, and officials reported a one-day record of 393 deaths from the virus.

Ten of the latest Dallas County victims were residents of Dallas: a man in his thirties, a man in his forties, a man and woman in their fifties, two women in their sixties, a man in his sixties and a man and two women. in their 80s. Two of them – the men in their 30s and 50s – had no underlying high-risk health problems, and two others – the woman in their 50s and the man in their 60s – lived in long-term care facilities.

Five of the victims lived in Mesquite: a woman in her forties, two men in her sixties, a man in his sixties and a man in his forties. All five had underlying health issues.

The other victims were a Balch Springs man in his sixties, a DeSoto woman in his sixties, a Farmers Branch man in his sixties, a Garland man in his sixties, and a Seagoville woman in his sixties. All but the Garland man had underlying health issues.

County Judge Clay Jenkins said in a written statement that the death of the Dallas man in his 30s was “a grim reminder that COVID can strike anyone.”

Jenkins also noted the latest coronavirus modeling from UT Southwestern Medical Center, which projects about 3,500 new cases daily by January 19, as well as 1,150 to 1,870 hospitalizations at that time.

But if residents take precautions against the spread of the virus and avoid non-essential activities, he said, “we’ll start to see the benefits of people who have been vaccinated so far, both in the capacity. of our health heroes to be at work. and not be sick with COVID and with our most at-risk residents protected from COVID. “

Of the new cases reported Thursday, 2,207 are confirmed and 383 are probable. The newly reported cases bring the total number of confirmed cases in the county to 186,181 and the probable cases to 23,211. The county has recorded 1,735 deaths from COVID-19.

Health officials are using hospitalizations, intensive care admissions and emergency room visits as key indicators to track the real-time impact of COVID-19 in the county. In the 24-hour period that ended Wednesday, a record 1,166 patients with COVID-19 were in acute care at county hospitals. During the same period, 592 emergency room visits were for symptoms of the disease.

State-wide data

Statewide, 24,578 additional cases and 393 deaths from COVID-19 were reported on Thursday, including 23,918 new cases and 660 older cases recently reported by labs. Texas has now reported 1,891,741 total cases and 28,938 deaths.

Of the new cases, 19,598 were confirmed and 4,320 were probable. The state has reported 1,666,487 confirmed cases and 225,254 probable cases.

Also on Thursday, health officials said the first case in the state of a more contagious variant of the coronavirus, believed to have originated in the UK, was reported in Harris County. The patient had no known travel history, so officials believe the strain is already circulating in the state.

There are 13,784 COVID-19 patients in Texas hospitals – the highest number – with 4,058 in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

The statewide seven-day average positivity rate for molecular testing, based on the date of specimen collection, was 20.7% on Wednesday. State health officials have said using data based on when people were tested provides the most accurate rate of positivity.

For antigen tests, the positivity rate for the same period was 12.4%.

Tarrant County

Tarrant County reported 2,444 coronavirus cases and 15 deaths on Thursday.

Seven of the latest victims were residents of Fort Worth: a man in his thirties, a man in his forties, a man in his sixties, three men in his sixties and a woman in his forties.

The other victims were two residents of Arlington, a man in his sixties and a woman in her sixties; two residents of North Richland Hills, a woman in her 80s and a man in her 90s; a woman from Bedford in her 80s; a Crowley woman in her sixties; an Euless man in his 70s; and a man from Keller in his sixties.

Thirteen of the victims had underlying health issues, officials said.

The newly reported cases bring the county’s total to 167,732, including 144,103 confirmed cases, 21,185 probable cases and 120,658 recoveries. The death toll stands at 1576.

According to figures on Thursday’s county dashboard, a record 1,528 people are hospitalized with the virus.

Collin County

The state added 892 coronavirus cases and nine new COVID-19 deaths to the Collin County totals on Thursday. The county has now recorded 54,623 cases and a death toll of 397.

No details on the latest casualties were available.

Of the new cases, 637 were confirmed and 255 were probable. Collin County has recorded 48,488 confirmed cases and 6,135 probable cases. According to state data, the county recorded 42,829 recoveries.

The county’s coronavirus dashboard only provides total hospitalizations, currently at 551.

Denton County

Denton County reported 690 cases of the coronavirus – of which 669 are active – and four new deaths on Thursday.

The latest victims were two Lewisville men in their 40s and 80s, a Corinthian man over 80 and a Denton man over 80 who lived at Carriage House Assisted Living.

The newly reported cases bring the county total to 42,095, with 13,342 active and 28,525 recovered. They also bring the total number of molecular cases to 34,382 and cases of antigens to 7,713.

The county’s death toll stands at 228.

There is a record 225 hospital patients for COVID-19, the county reports.

• Rockwall County: 7,300 cases (6,130 confirmed and 1,170 probable), 59 deaths.
• Kaufman County: 10,300 cases (9,018 confirmed and 1,282 probable), 134 deaths.
• Ellis County: 14,578 cases (12,873 confirmed and 1,705 probable), 180 deaths.
• Johnson County: 12,350 cases (10,984 confirmed and 1,366 probable), 174 deaths.
