Michael Irvin, legend of the Hall of Fame and Dallas Cowboys, revealed Tuesday that he had undergone throat cancer tests.
The 53-year-old announced the announcement on Instagram, saying he had spent Sunday and Monday at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles. He said that throat cancer had always haunted him because he had taken his father to 51 years.
"This demon (sp) has chased and vexed me deep in my mind all my life. So, say I'm afraid this time is a big understatement, "wrote Irvin. "I AM TERRIFIED !! My faith tells me that every time you face a great fear, you are going to the power of your greatness, mine is God."

Irvin said the problems began in late November when the Cowboys beat the Saints 13-10. He said that he was so pleased that he lost his voice, but the problem persisted for two months. A doctor finally advised him to have a throat biopsy, Irvin said.

Irvine asked his followers to pray for him and his family during this difficult time, adding, "I will continue to pray for the protection and prosperity of your family. May God bless us all. "
Irvin, who won three Super Bowls before retiring in 1999 due to a spinal injury, was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2007.
