MADISON (WKOW) – Public Health Madison and Dane County issued a new health order on Monday that further eased restrictions on businesses and gatherings.
Under the decree, indoor gatherings will be allowed to accommodate up to 50 people while outdoor congregations can include up to 150. This doubles the limits set by the previous ordinance.
“This order eases restrictions on important aspects of daily life, and I hope we can continue on this path as we move into spring,” said Janel Heinrich, director of public health for Madison and County. by Dane. “As we carefully adjust our orders in recognition of improving conditions, and vaccinate more people, we will continue to monitor where we stand.”
Emergency Order 13 takes effect on Wednesday.
The command also allows all forms of games and sports as long as participants practice social distancing.
When Order No.12 was issued on January 11, the seven-day case average was 213 and 71 people were hospitalized for COVID-19. Today, the seven-day average of cases is 107 and there are 63 people hospitalized with the disease, according to a public health press release.

Dane County released a summary of the new rules:
Gatherings
- Indoor and outdoor assembly limits have increased.
- An indoor gathering where food or drink is offered or provided is limited to 25 people. An indoor gathering where food or drink is not offered or provided is limited to 50 people. Individuals must maintain six feet physical distance and face coverings are required.
- An outdoor gathering where food or drink is offered or provided is limited to 100 people. An outdoor gathering where food or drink is not offered or provided is limited to 150 people. Individuals must maintain six feet of physical distance. Face cover required for gatherings of more than 50 people.
Masks
- Updated the permitted face covering types and added additional face covering requirements for outdoor locations.
- Outdoors while participating in a sporting event, including drills, practices, scrums, games or competitions, unless the sport is played individually, or played with physical distance at all times.
- Outside while attending a gathering of more than fifty (50) people.
Sports and games
- Games and competitions are permitted for all sports. In most situations, individuals must wear masks.
- A physical distance of six feet is required, except when a person actively participates in sport.
- Sports that cannot maintain physical distance at all times are limited to 25 people indoors and 100 people outdoors, not including employees.
- All sports must have a hygiene policy, a cleaning policy and a protective measures policy.
Child care
- Removed provision to limit regulated child care centers and 4-year-old kindergarten groups to 15. Indoor youth facilities must respect assembly limits.
Retail stores
- Temporary retail stores can operate under the same requirements as permanent retail stores.
