Daniel Cormier publishes a statement on the retirement of Alexander Gustafsson

Alexander Gustafsson may have never worn the UFC gold himself, but he has the respect of the greatest champions of the sport.

Current light truck owner Jon Jones has already praised the Swedish MMA pioneer, who has fought Jones twice in league action and retired last weekend after losing to Anthony Smith in the UFC Stockholm. Now it's Daniel Cormier, another former enemy of Gustafsson, who showed a little love.

Cormier visited Instagram on Sunday to share his thoughts on Gustafsson's decision to hang up the gloves:

"Alex, you'll be forever one of the greatest players in my career," wrote Cormier. "We accepted, we had a fight and we squabbled, but in the end you made me better, you improved the sport, you are a warrior and we will really miss you!

"I understand motivational changes and for you, now is your family. I say now that you are starting to really live the good life. Congratulations for this beautiful career my man! You are a hammer! See you later."

Cormier, who was currently defending his heavyweight title in a rematch against Stipe Miocic at UFC 241 in August, played five innings with Gustafsson at UFC 192 on Oct. 3, 2015. He was one of the best players in the game. was the first defense of the reign of a very close decision to win over Gustafsson after five rounds of back and forth.
