Doctors nationwide are warning of a medical nightmare they plan to strike after Thanksgiving as new coronavirus infections are expected to reach new highs.
Dr Joseph Varon, chief of staff at United Memorial Medical Center in Houston, told CNN he was concerned the US medical system could not handle another massive influx of COVID-19 patients he expects to come. throughout the holiday season.
“My worries for the next six to 12 weeks are that if we don’t get it right, America is going through the darkest days in modern American medical history,” he said. “My hospital is full. I just opened two new wings to be able to accommodate myself for the next few days because I know a lot of people are going to get sick after Thanksgiving.
Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, also told CNN he fears the holiday season will have a cascading effect that will crush US hospitals.
“I’m concerned that the Thanksgiving Day surge will then just add to what will become the Christmas wave, which will make this one seem like not that bad,” he said. “We have to understand that we are in a very dangerous place. People have to stop exchanging air. “
