The daughter of an unvaccinated man who recently died from COVID-19 told CNN on Monday that she believed her father had been the victim of disinformation, in particular claiming that Fox News star Tucker Carlson “played a role” in reluctance to vaccinate which led to his death.
Patrick Lane, a 20-year Boeing designer, died of COVID-19 just days before Pfizer’s coronavirus vaccine received full federal approval. Although in good health with no underlying conditions, Lane quickly deteriorated after his diagnosis and was quickly placed on a ventilator. Since her death, Lane’s family have launched a public appeal for people to get vaccinated.
Her two children, Katie and Evan Lane, told CNN New day On Monday, when their father was not an “anti-vaccine” and planned to get the shot after the Food and Drug Administration fully approved the vaccinations, his hesitation was fueled by the media he consumed.
“There are a number of reasons, I think,” Katie Lane replied when asked why her father hadn’t been vaccinated. “One of them was some of the media he ingested. He was by no means extreme right. He was right in the middle, and he consumed the media on both sides, and just some of the misinformation on one of those sides made him hesitate.
She added, “So he was going to wait for FDA approval, but by the time Pfizer was approved it was already too late.”
Evan Lane reiterated that his father “was not anti-vaccine” but was rather “just hesitant”, adding that his father would have no problem telling people to get the vaccine now. In fact, according to Evan, his father’s last words to their mother-in-law were that he “wished to be vaccinated.”
Referring to remarks she made to a local Washington news station, CNN presenter John Berman noted that Katie said “one media source in particular” fueled her father’s misinformation about the vaccine, asking him to clarify.
“He watched Tucker Carlson videos on YouTube, and some of those videos involved vaccine misinformation, and I think that played a role,” she said.
The Fox News star has spent months relentlessly questioning the effectiveness and safety of coronavirus vaccines on her top-rated show. While insisting that he is “pro-vaccine” and that he believes “vaccines are great” and “not dangerous,” he simultaneously (and falsely) suggested that highly effective COVID-19 injections should not be are not functioning and have caused thousands of deaths.
And even though the vast majority of coronavirus hospitalizations and deaths occur among the unvaccinated, Carlson has gone on a rampage against vaccine requirements – despite his own employer bragging about his vaccine policy – while still claiming that there is a “mixed picture” between vaccine effectiveness and deadly side effects.
