Diogo Jota tipped for new role at Liverpool

Liverpool could use Diogo Jota in midfield this season, according to former Premier League right-back Danny Mills.

Harvey Elliott suffered a devastating injury in the 3-0 win at Leeds last week and had to undergo ankle surgery.

Hopefully the youngster will return before the end of the season, but Mills believes the Reds could strengthen their midfield in Elliott’s absence by leaving Jota deeper, saying Jurgen Klopp can afford to make the switch, such is the strength of Liverpool in depth from the start.

Speaking to Football Insider, he said:

Maybe no one expected Harvey Elliott to be as consistent as he was after breaking onto the scene. He’s done incredibly well and it’s a sad situation for him.

They will certainly get over it. In this area, they have enough strength in depth.

If it was a Sadio Mane or Mo Salah or Virgil van Dijk then you think “Ooh, that would really affect them”.

They have James Milner, they have Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, they have Thiago, they have Diogo Jota who can come there. Jordan Henderson and Fabinho are obviously already there. They have enough players in there.

They should have enough to cope when looking at their midfield.
