Dave chappelle Thursday laughed at all efforts to bring him and his new Netflix “The Closer” special canceled.
The 48-year-old artist took to the stage at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, California on Thursday night for the screening of his documentary. The sold-out crowd also watched performances by Stevie Wonder, Snoop Dogg, Jon Hamm, Nas, Lizzo, poet Amir Sulaiman, Jeff Rose, Talib Kewli, and more.
Addressing the roughly 18,000 people in the crowd while wearing sneakers and a costume, Deadline reports that Chappelle touched on the fact that a number of individuals and groups are calling for “The Closer” to be removed from the streamer in because of the alleged transphobic comments he makes in it.
“If that’s the subject of the cancellation, I love it,” Chappelle said to the boos and screams of fans in attendance, according to the outlet.

He added, “I don’t know what to tell you except I’m a bad mother —- uh.”
According to the report, Chappelle shared his own take on today’s “cancellation culture”.

“This is the conspiracy of kindness,” he said, later adding that he believed Americans “should trust each other.”
At one point on the show, Chappelle also slammed big tech by calling out Twitter. “F — Twitter,” he reportedly said, garnering support from the crowd.
Chappelle’s appearance on Thursday came just two days after the start of his sixth installment of his contract with Netflix, prompting protests from LGBTQ + activists for his alleged defense of “Harry Potter” author JK Rowling.
“They canceled JK Rowling – my God,” Chappelle said in her special. “Sure enough, she said gender is a fact, the trans community got pissed off because (curse) they started calling her TERF.”

“I’m the TERF team. I agree. I agree, man. Gender is a fact,” Chappelle added (via United States today). “TERF” stands for “trans-exclusionist radical feminist,” and is essentially a term for people who call themselves feminists while being transphobic.
Many critics ended up disputing Chappelle’s comments on Twitter. Jaclyn Moore, executive producer and showrunner of “Dear White People,” tweeted that the special made him cry. She also vowed not to work with the streamer again until Netflix ended the inclusion of transphobic commentary in its lineup.
“I told the story of my transition to @netflix and @most Pride week. It’s a network that has been my home on @DearWhitePeople. I loved working there. I will not work with them as long as they continue to broadcast and enjoy clearly and dangerously transphobic content. I love so many people I’ve worked with at Netflix. Brilliant people and executives who collaborated and fought for an important art … I was thrown bottles of beer. So, @Netflix, I’m done “, Moore tweeted.
So HELLO issued a declaration on his Twitter account, writing: “Dave Chappelle’s brand has become synonymous with ridiculing trans people and other marginalized communities. With negative reviews and viewers loudly condemning his latest special is a message to the industry that the public does not support the platform of anti-LGBTQ rants. We agree. “

The National Black Justice Coalition, a civil rights group focused on the LGBTQ + community, also responded and called on Netflix to remove “The Closer” from its catalog.

“With 2021 set to be the deadliest year on record for transgender people in the United States – the majority of whom are black transgender people – Netflix should know better,” said NBJC executive director David Johns, in a statement. Deadline. “Perpetuating transphobia perpetuates violence. Netflix should immediately remove ‘The Closer’ from its platform and apologize directly to the transgender community.”
Also on the special, Chappelle discusses the recent backlash rapper DaBaby received after making homophobic comments at a recent Miami area music festival about people living with HIV / AIDS. He was forced to issue multiple apologies as criticism led him to be discontinued from the Lollapalooza range.

“Part of the LGBTQ + community doesn’t know the story of DaBaby,” says Chappelle (via Billboard). “He shot once [19-year-old Jaylin Craig] and killed him, at Walmart. It’s true.”
“DaBaby shot and killed a [man] at Walmart in North Carolina. Nothing serious has happened to his career, ”he continues. ” You see what I mean ? In our country you can shoot and kill a [man], but you better not hurt the feelings of a gay man. “
Fox46 reported at the time that charges in the shooting were dropped after a key witness failed to appear to testify. DaBaby claims Craig was trying to steal him, but his family say he wasn’t.
Chappelle suggested during a performance Thursday that he was not worried about being canceled.

In October 2019, the Grammy nominated The rapper told Billboard, “I’m not losing sleep” over the shooting which he said was “inevitable.”
Chappelle, who backlash previously taken for the allegedly transphobic remarks made in its previous Netflix special “Sticks & Stones”, concluded its special by offering a half-hearted truce to the LGBTQ + community when it comes to telling jokes about them.

“I don’t tell another joke on you until we’re both sure we’re laughing together,” the comedian said. “Anything I ask of your community – in all humility – please stop hitting my people?” ”
Representatives for Chappelle, JK Rowling and DaBaby did not immediately return Fox News’ requests for comment. A Netflix spokesperson declined to comment.
