A gunman accused of shooting an officer in Massachusetts has died following a standoff lasting several hours, according to a district attorney.

Officers arrived at a Brockton home on Thursday after 911 calls regarding a gunman, Plymouth District Attorney Timothy Cruz told media.

After Brockton police arrived, an officer was shot several times, including in his body armor, Cruz said. The officer was rushed to hospital and is expected to recover.

Meanwhile, the gunman retreated into the house and a standoff ensued for several hours, media reported. The man came out later and Cruz said it looked like the shooter had shot himself. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators were also investigating the death of a man found dead in an SUV near the house. It was not immediately clear whether the death and the situation with the shooter were related.

Neither the name of the gunman nor the name of the officer was released on Thursday.
