A shooting in the Dominican Republic that injured Sunday David Ortiz, former star of the Boston Red Sox, has hit many players in baseball and left an indelible mark on a pitcher.

The New York Yankees reliever, Zack Britton, whose mother is from the Dominican Republic and still has family there, told the New York Post on Monday that the shooting was one of the reasons she had not been there for a very long time.

"That's why my mom does not want me to go back," Britton told the newspaper. "Most of my family is in Santo Domingo. Unfortunately, this is not the safest place. I have not been back for a very long time. "

Ortiz appeared to be the target of a shootout in a bar in Santo Domingo. He was shot in the chest at close range and the doctors were forced to remove his gallbladder and part of his bowel.
