A Kentucky man charged with Savannah Spurlock's death has been charged with murder, the WDRB reported.

David Sparks was arrested last month and accused of falsifying material evidence and abusing a corpse after Spurlock's remains were found on property related to Sparks' family in the rural county of Garrard.

Spurlock, 23, was last seen leaving a bar in Lexington last January with three men, including Sparks.

At a hearing last month, a Kentucky state police inspector said that Spurlock's body had been found in a 19-inch deep grave. The body was covered with black trash bags and the authorities say that she was buried with a gray carpet from Sparks' bedroom, which he replaced with a similar carpet.

"Nothing in this situation is positive or happy, because this face haunts our nightmares for a long time," said Spurlock's family in a statement released Wednesday on Facebook. "… Savannah had before her a beautiful life that had been stolen from her."

The statement adds that Sparks will be prosecuted for murder on September 6. The online prison records do not indicate whether Sparks is represented by a lawyer who could comment on the case.
