Posted on October 7, 2021 in Latest news, Writing

(KAHULUI) – Two Maui residents, a father and son, are charged with taking and possessing a green turtle, a protected species, after being spotted by a Conservation and Enforcement Officer DLNR resources (DOCARE) during a routine patrol.

At 6:50 a.m. on Sunday, the officer reported seeing the men retrieving a lobster net from a coastal area known as Round Tables in the Waiehu area on Maui’s north coast.

The officer contacted the men and found a dead turtle entangled in a fishing net. It had been placed in a metal tub which was attached to an inner tube. The turtle and all physical objects involved have been taken as evidence and NOAA has been notified of the incident.

Randall Del Castillo Sr., 57, and Randall Del Castillo Jr., 33, both of Wailuku, have been cited for taking and possessing a green sea turtle, which is an activity prohibited under administrative rules from Hawaii. Both men have court dates changed to Nov. 18 in Maui District Court.
