David Y. Igé | Governor’s Office press release: Governor Ige calls for responsible behavior over Labor Day weekend

HONOLULU – Governor David Ige is reaching out to the residents of the State of Hawaii to urge them more than ever to behave responsibly over the upcoming three-day Labor Day weekend. State employees and business leaders have received emails from the governor asking them to do their individual and collective part to stop the spread of COVID-19 as the state experiences a disastrous increase in cases. The government also posted an urgent video message on social media.

“Due to COVID, our hospital system across the state is at risk of heading for the worst case scenario. If that happens, health officials are warning that choices will have to be made, that people may not get the care they need and that some will die, ”Governor Ige said in the email.

The governor continues to urge residents to get vaccinated, but also encourages additional measures during this critical time, especially during the long holiday weekend:

• Avoid confined spaces with poor ventilation
• Avoid crowded places with many people nearby and
• Avoid close contact settings, such as close conversations

You can also reduce your risk of getting sick by:

• Define your own curfews
• Avoiding activities that could lead to exposure and illness – or increase your risk of trauma
• Get tested a few days after arriving in Hawai’i if you’ve traveled

“Your choices can help our community avoid the worst case scenario in our hospital system. Please act responsibly this holiday weekend and move forward – as we fight this highly transmissible and deadly virus. Do it – for the good of your family, our community and our state, ”Governor Ige said.
