Deadly disease detected in another herd of Michigan cattle

LANSING, Mich. Officials say a small herd of beef cattle in northern Michigan has been infected with bovine tuberculosis.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of the State indicated that the herd was in the county of Alpena, which is part of a northern region of the Lower Peninsula where the deadly disease is common in white-tailed deer. Contact with the deer would be a common way of transmitting the disease to livestock.
The infection was detected by routine tests. This is the 74th herd of cattle to be diagnosed with the disease since 1998.
An investigation is planned to identify and test other herds associated with the infected.
