MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS, Wyo. (KIFI) – Park search and rescue teams located the body of Mark O’Neill along the eastern shore of Shoshone Lake in Yellowstone National Park on Monday.
O’Neill, 67, of Chimacum, Wash., And his half-brother Kim Crumbo, 74, of Ogden, Utah, were reported late by a family member on Sunday September 19 after their four-night trip in the backcountry at Shoshone Lake.
On Sunday, park teams located a vacant campground with equipment on the south shore of Shoshone Lake, as well as a canoe, paddle, PFD and other personal effects on the lake’s eastern shore. Crews located O’Neill’s body along the eastern shore on Monday morning.
Search and rescue efforts continue with 10 crew members on foot in the area on Tuesday to locate Crumbo. The Grand Teton National Park interagency ship and crew are also involved in flight operations.
O’Neill and Crumbo are both National Park Service (NPS) retirees and Crumbo is a former Navy Seal.
This incident is still under investigation. While the park cannot comment further on the details of this investigation, it will provide updates as appropriate.
Officials urge the public to keep a distance from all law enforcement personnel, equipment, vehicles and their related activities for the safety of the public in this remote area and to protect the integrity of our work.
Shoshone Lake, the second largest lake in the park, is located at the head of the Lewis River southwest of West Thumb. At 8,050 acres (3,258 ha), its year round average temperature is about 48 F (9 C). Survival time is estimated at only 20 to 30 minutes in water at this temperature.
