President Donald Trump called the national coronavirus death toll calculated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention “Fake news” on Twitter Sunday.
That figure, counted by an agency in Trump’s own administration, rose to 350,000 on Sunday as cases continue to climb. Dr Ashish Jha, the dean of the Brown University School of Public Health, called the president’s baseless claim “deeply disturbing.”
“First of all, this is not fake news. that’s real news, ”CNN International presenter Jha told Rosemary Church early Monday morning. “This is probably an underestimate of the number of people who have died from this pandemic in the United States.”
Since the start of the epidemic, public health experts have pointed out that the official tally of coronavirus deaths could be considerably lower than the actual figure. A September study from the Boston University School of Public Health suggested the tally at the time may have been 36% lower than the actual death toll.
“His comments are so disrespectful to the families of these loved ones,” Jha said. “Their losses are not fake news. It’s just shocking to me that this is where our president is now in his final days in office, not only refusing to shoulder his responsibilities, but really trying to erase the losses we suffered last year.
