Residents of Farragut, Tennessee were completely stunned when they saw a white-tailed deer strut casually around their town. Upon closer inspection, they discovered that the animal had hairs growing out of its eyeballs.
As confused townspeople tried to capture the Daring Deer, they couldn’t help but notice that it had thick hair protruding from discs of flesh that had grown out and covered the eyeballs of the deer.
It turns out the condition is known as corneal dermoids and has only been documented in another white-tailed deer, also in Tennessee.
The condition is basically the result of a benign tumor, made up of tissue that would typically occur elsewhere in the body, in this case complete skin with hair follicles forming on the cornea or a clear part of the eyeball.
According to Sterling Daniels, a wildlife biologist at the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA), deer “Maybe he could make out the day from the dark, but I don’t think he would be able to see where it was.”

This particular male, found roaming the streets of Farragut, Tennessee in August 2020, was later diagnosed with epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD) which can cause fever, tissue inflammation and almost complete loss of fear in humans. , which may explain his disorder. -eyed stroll in town.
Researchers suspect that the furry eye patch likely formed while the deer was still in utero.
Worryingly, humans can develop dermoids in their eyes, although the condition is extremely rare. It can cause blurry vision but does not lead to extreme vision problems. Dermoids can also be removed surgically although this does not improve the patient’s eyesight.
