The Indianapolis Colts will face the Tennessee Titans for the lead of the AFC South without defensive lineman DeForest Buckner.
Buckner, who was placed on the reserve / COVID-19 roster on Wednesday, tested positive and will not play on Sunday, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported.
It was not clear earlier in the week whether Buckner had tested positive for COVID-19 or had been placed on the reserve list as a high-risk close contact. Rapoport’s report shuts the door on any chance Buckner will be wiped out on Sunday. A player who tests positive for COVID-19 may not return to the squad until at least 10 days after symptoms start, according to league protocol.
The loss is a blow to the Colts’ strong defense as it prepares to slow the attack on Derrick Henry and the Titans. Buckner generated 40 tackles, 2.5 sacks, 16 hits, one safety, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble as a key cog in the middle of the defense. More than counting stats, Buckner’s presence destroys pockets and attracts attention, freeing others to play.
The winner of the Colts-Titans rematch on Sunday afternoon will take charge of the AFC South. An Indy victory would mean a season sweep for the Colts over their division rival.
