DEKALB COUNTY, Georgia – As schools prepare to welcome students again next month, Georgia’s third largest school district has announced it will require masks this fall.

DeKalb County Schools Have Released Their New Guidelines Monday for the start of the school year, which is set for August 2.

The school district said masks will be mandatory for everyone, regardless of immunization status, in all school buildings out of caution.

“The district will review effective methods to identify vaccinated students and staff and re-evaluate optional mask wear. Parents are strongly encouraged to consult with their health care provider to learn about the best vaccine options for their family. “

The mask will also be required for all indoor clubs and extracurricular meetings. Masks are optional for organized outdoor activities, including sporting events. However, masks will be mandatory in locker rooms and weight rooms.

The new guidelines come a week after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last week released new guidelines for vaccinated students and teachers.

Students who have been vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus do not have to wear face masks to school this fall, unless they take the school bus, according to the CDC.

The guidelines also state that students may be required to wear a face mask if a school district decides they are needed. The CDC continues to call on unvaccinated students and staff to wear masks.

In addition, the guidelines state that all school bus drivers and their passengers, whether vaccinated or not, must wear a mask when going to and from school.

This is also part of the policy of the DeKalb County schools.
