Del Norte County’s first coronavirus death on record today, emergency services say

Del Norte County Emergency Services Department Press Release:

We are deeply saddened to announce that a member of the Del Norte County community has died after being hospitalized with symptoms of COVID-19 and was confirmed positive. Our hearts go out to those close to this person and to all who are grieving. The deceased was over 65 and had several underlying health issues.

Investigation into this person’s COVID-19 illness case suggests it was a community-acquired infection. No specific place or event has been identified as the source of the infection.

This case represents a milestone for our community and tragically reminds us that we must all do our part to protect each other, especially the most vulnerable. We urge our community to be diligent in preventing the spread of COVID-19 in our community by:

• Wear a face mask in public
• Wash your hands often
• Maintain a distance of at least 6 feet from other people outside your household
• Avoid gatherings
• Limitation of non-essential travel
• Avoid those who are sick
• Stay home if you are sick
