Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr Roshan Parasram said on Monday that transmission of the Delta variant of the Covid-19 virus has reached the level of community spread in Trinidad and Tobago.
Parasram, which made the statement at the Department of Health’s Covid-19 virtual press conference, was responding at the time to a question regarding Victoria County with the highest percentage of active cases (26.7% ) from all communities in Trinidad and Tobago.
“In terms of Victoria numbers, Victoria has been in percentage terms the longest, maybe more than a few months, has been the county that has had the most cases in terms of percentage. They also have a very populated area, so there are a lot of people in that particular county. “
He said that while the contact tracing carried out by the county medical officer of health was continuous and ongoing, and the work continues through testing, treatment and isolation as best they can, which what they need is for people to really come forward and get vaccinated as quickly as possible, not only in Victoria but in all counties across the country, so that they have that level of protection against Covid-19.
“I think that’s the main thing we need to focus on at this point, is really getting those immunization numbers across the country as quickly as possible, especially in light of the issue, and we’re seeing that the Delta variant is now reaching the stage where it can be said to be in community broadcast. We reportedly reported six more cases last night, five of which have nothing to do with travel, so we can clearly say that we are now in a community in Delta, albeit in its early stages. “
Parasram noted that of the five cases, four of them were linked to different previously positive Covid-19 cases.
“So they would have been contacts of other positive cases, these cases themselves have not yet been Delta and testing is ongoing. So out of the five, there was one case that was basically a stand-alone case where we are continuing the epidemiological investigation.
The CMO noted that it takes about two to three weeks to retrieve these Delta samples.
“There were two that were linked to a case and two more in a different geographic location, again linked to another case, Delta unknown. More or less what we are seeing is that the majority of them appear to be asymptomatic and the reason we picked up these four cases is because of their relationship to the other positives that we would have tested using the new ones. criteria and of course we sent them forward to Delta.
“The majority of them so far, these five people, appear to have asymptomatic or mild disease, at least these are the ones we’ve detected so far,” Parasram said.
