Delta variant public health surveillance, urges community to get vaccinated

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC – New Hanover County Public Health Health and Human Services is monitoring the impact of the new Delta variant and urging all residents to get vaccinated to protect themselves from the spread of COVID-19 .

As vaccination rates decline, new cases of COVID-19 increase, especially among unvaccinated residents. With more activity and businesses reopening for the busy summer season, the risk of COVID-19 infections has also increased and is of particular concern with the potential impacts of the new Delta variant.

“Nationwide, fifty percent of new cases are attributed to the new Delta variant, and we are very concerned and want to be sure that you are protected,” said director of health and human services Donna Fayko. “This new variant is much more transferable. It brings more serious illness. Those who are vaccinated do not receive it at the same rate as those who are not vaccinated. And in fact, in North Carolina, ninety-nine percent of new cases occur in unvaccinated people. We are seeing an increase in outbreaks in counties with low vaccination rates, so I am here to encourage you to consider getting vaccinated to protect yourself and your loved ones. “

COVID-19 Data in New Hanover County:

  • As of July 15, there had been 19,901 total cases of COVID-19 in New Hanover County, including 77 new cases in the past week.
  • Of the total number of cases, 19,574 have recovered and 150 cases are presumed to be still active. Unfortunately, 177 people have died from the virus.
  • In New Hanover County, about 120,913 residents (about 52%) have received a dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, and about 114,786 residents (about 49%) are fully immunized and protected against COVID-19.
  • In the state county alert system, New Hanover County remains in the light yellow level, signifying moderate community spread of COVID-19. The current county metrics in the system update are as follows:
    • 14-day case rate per 100,000 people: 38.40
    • Percentage of positivity over 14 days: 1.5%
    • Impact on the hospital: Light
