Manchin’s reaction to Schumer’s debt ceiling speech attracts speculation online
Senator Joe Manchin, D-WVa., Went viral Thursday night because of his reaction to Senator Chuck Schumer’s speech in the Senate shortly after the vote to extend the government’s borrowing power until December.
Schumer, the Senate Majority Leader, used the platform to criticize Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ken., For earlier comments about forcing Democrats to raise the debt ceiling without any Republican support – going through a “long, convoluted and risky reconciliation process”.
“It was just unacceptable to my caucus,” Schumer said.
Manchin, who is perhaps the second most popular person in Washington, DC these days, sat directly behind Schumer and could be seen shaking his head like the way a baseball manager in a dugout reacts to his team who let go of your head. He seemed exasperated as Schumer continued before putting his head in his hands and finally leaving while his New York colleague continued.
Manchin’s office did not immediately respond to an after-hours email from Fox News about the senator’s reaction.
Another video appeared to show Manchin stepping out of the Capitol, saying he hoped the two sides would “disarm”. He said both sides were frustrated, “but that was not the way to go.”
