Demonstrations took place in metro Detroit against the vaccination mandate of Henry Ford Hospital employees

DETROIT – Protests were held outside hospitals in the Henry Ford health system on Saturday by those who believe the new vaccine mandate crosses a line.

The rallies of healthcare workers in the metro Detroit area were not meant to celebrate the work of fighting the coronavirus, but to probably push the spread further by fighting the mandate that all employees of the Henry Ford healthcare system must be fully immunized by September 10.

While some of the protesters were frontline workers, most were not and were protesting the vaccine as a dangerous new variant of COVID spreads.

Protests took place in Detroit, Clinton Township, West Bloomfield and Wyandotte.

The protest at Henry Ford’s flagship hospital in Detroit was attended by GOP gubernatorial candidate Ryan Kelley, who promoted the rally on social media.

Kelley was reported to the FBI for storming the United States Capitol on January 6 after activists claimed to identify him in photos of the deadly riot. Kelley denies entering the building.

The protests against the vaccine come as the Centers for Disease Control And Prevention sounded the alarm bells about the highly contagious delta variant which is now spreading in all 50 states, fueling a further increase in cases – including here in Michigan, where the rate of fully immunized has stagnated at 53%.

Henry Ford Health System released the following statement:

“We received broad support from our patients, team members and the community for our decision to require the COVID-19 vaccine for team members. At the same time, we recognize that uncertainty remains for some and respect the rights of our Henry Ford family members, as well as those of our communities at large, to voice their concerns. Data and science continue to strengthen the safety and effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines, including the mitigation of new and emerging threats like the Delta variant. As such, we know more than ever that vaccination is the absolute best way to end this pandemic and we remain confident in our decision. We are deeply committed to working alongside every team member who has concerns or questions. “

Only two health systems in the Detroit metro area have mandated vaccines – Henry Ford and Trinity Healthcare. Other big names, like Beaumont and Michigan Medicine, have not said whether they will follow suit.

Nationally, the United States has recorded an average of more than 26,000 new cases of COVID in the past week, a 67% increase from the previous week.
