KATHMANDU: Six people have died from dengue fever and more than 5096 have been diagnosed positive in Nepal since the outbreak of the disease in May, said Division of Epidemiology and Disease Control (EDCD) ) from the country.
The mosquito-borne disease, first reported in the city of Dharan, has spread to more than 56 of the 77 districts of the Himalayan nation.
"The number of people infected with dengue fever is steadily increasing throughout the country and takes the form of an epidemic. While the government at all levels is trying to control the spread of the disease, the Numbers continue to increase, said Kamala Subedi., a resident of Kathmandu Valley who went to the Sukraraj Tropical and Infectious Diseases Hospital for the test.
According to the EDCD, so far, Kathmandu has recorded the highest number of cases infected with dengue, with at least 1,170 cases, followed by Kathmandu and Chitwan, with 1,128 and 728 registered cases, respectively.
Dengue fever has become a major health problem in recent years in a number of developing countries. The Aedes aegypti mosquito is the main vector of transmission of the viruses responsible for dengue fever. The abundance of stagnant water allows the mosquito to proliferate easily.
