ALBTER LEA, Minnesota (KTTC) – The Minnesota Department of Health is investigating cases of Legionnaire’s disease linked to a Ramada hotel in Albert Lea.

Investigators have so far identified two laboratory-confirmed cases among people from unrelated groups who were at the Ramada in Wyndham Albert Lea and spent time in the pool / hot tub around the last weekend of June. These people fell ill between the end of June and the beginning of July. One was hospitalized and was discharged; one is still hospitalized. There are reports of additional people with this exposure suffering from illnesses which could be Legionnaires’ disease; MDH is continuing its investigation.

MDH said the disease is spread by inhaling water sources containing the Legionella bacteria. It is not passed from person to person. The incubation period is 14 days.

MDH investigators are working with the hotel to further determine the source of the Legionella bacteria could be. At present, the first evidence and past experience suggests that the source of the infections could be the hotel spa (hot tub). The hotel closed the spa for maintenance on June 29 and the pool is closed to guests at this time. MDH staff work with hotel staff on recommendations for cleaning and decontaminating the spa and pool.

MDH suggests that anyone who has stayed at the hotel and becomes ill should see a health care provider and get examined for Legionnaires’ disease.
