Derek Jeter ‘not surprised’ by Yankees big push on deadline

MIAMI – Derek Jeter was busy with the trade deadline as president of the Marlins, but he always saw what his former team did by adding a pair of powerful left-handed bats to Joey Gallo and Anthony Rizzo.

“Look, the Steinbrenner family, from The Boss [George Steinbrenner] in Hal, they’re always trying to improve, Jeter said before his Marlins lost 3-1 to the Yankees on Friday night at LoanDepot Park. “They don’t hesitate to make big moves, so I’m not surprised.

He added that he was watching his former team “from afar”.

“I have enough trouble with what we’re doing here,” Jeter said.

He’s still waiting for success as an executive similar to the success he achieved when he played in the Bronx in a career that saw him take a trip to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Jeter’s induction ceremony in Cooperstown, NY, has been postponed a year ago due to COVID-19. Jeter said he had just started taking notes for the speech he will deliver when he is finally inducted on September 8.

“We just had the trade deadline,” Jeter said. “So now maybe I’ll start to think about it a little more.” I don’t think I’m too excited yet.

He is happy that fans can attend his induction ceremony, which would not have been the case had it not been pushed back earlier this year.

“No fan would have been a little weird,” Jeter said. “I understood that, but it would have been strange.”
