‘Destiny 2’ players will definitely fail the Dawning Community challenge without Bungie’s help

Well, I’ve continued to follow Destiny 2’s Dawning Community Challenge since it went live with its five different objective stages. It always seemed like a reach to hit the $ 1 billion end goal, but now that we’re deeply committed to it, it’s clear that it’s downright impossible without Bungie stepping in to do something.

I was told that once people went on winter vacation the numbers would increase. Or again, people got the Dawning ship that generates Spirit, that would help. Neither was true, and the gains from both aspects were outweighed by a general lack of interest in the event, and the pace was only slow motion over time, the higher the target.

Destiny 2 players took the third step yesterday near the reset, but the datamined values for the next step were true, and the goal doubled from 250 million to 500 million, making it feel like doubling again to 1 billion will actually happen. There were rumors of a “stealth buff” to Generation Dawning Spirit by Bungie, but it didn’t work. There was a push just to reset as people threw cookies for the new weekly bounties, but it didn’t last. About 20 hours later, the new progress bar has only moved 6% (it started at 50%).

While yes, Dawning runs until January 5th, the math doesn’t work here. To demonstrate this, the reader Soren42 created a very simple and clean Google Spreadsheet that updates every few hours which you can follow here. (Update: here’s one that updates even more often).

Here is where it is currently:

What this means is that we will reach the milestone 4 goal in about a week at the current rate, it will take more than 22 days to reach the end goal of 1 billion, provided that does not change. not. Sadly, The Dawning only has 13 days left, so it won’t even be close. Even if the target were 750 million, we probably wouldn’t meet it either.

This has happened before, of course. Bungie had a similar situation during Season of the Worthy where they had to increase the multiplier for a community event that wasn’t going fast enough because they overestimated the end goal. There the problem was both the high numbers and the players didn’t want to continue grinding a public event that they had already done to death and didn’t like in the first place. The problem here is that cultivating Dawning Spirit is just plain boring and unrewarding. You got poor souls like a streamer Chevy get 1300% of his Personal Spirit requirement for Triumphs by dedicating himself to farming just to watch the progress bar move maybe 1% during his play session.

The other problem is that we have no idea of the final price. The symbol says something of “exotic” rarity, but Destiny players know it could be anything from an exotic sparrow to an exotic past like Heir Apparent to a random exotic drop. The only thing I can see as an award that would be really ‘motivating’ and making the community come together to work harder would be knowing that this was a coveted new exotic catalyst (Thorn!) Or a whole new exotic period. But we have no idea.

There is a contingent of Destiny players who want us to fail challenge A) just to see what happens and B) teach Bungie that community events like this are pretty bad and unnecessary and need to be reworked. I don’t disagree with that.

I’m guessing we’ll see Bungie jump with a progress multiplier at some point if things keep going badly. Otherwise, who knows, maybe we fail and never know what the final mystery is. But I doubt it.

I would tell you to keep grinding but I mean, no. It’s impossible at this point unless something changes, so we’ll see what happens next. The ball is in Bungie’s court.
