Justin Bieber stars as the beloved grandson in his new music video for “Ghost.” After the death of his grandfather, the singer reconnects with his grandmother, takes long walks with her along Ventura beach, updates his dating profiles and takes her out for a cocktail and dance party. It’s a beautiful story in itself, but her fictional grandmother is played by none other than Oscar-winning actress Diane Keaton, the fanciest grandma you could ask for.
Vogue has an exclusive look at the video, which is released tomorrow and is directed by Colin Tilley. Turns out, Bieber handpicked the style icon to play his grandmother. “He called me and I said ‘yeah sure'”, says Keaton. Vogue. “I thought the song was wonderful.” Compared, for example, to memorizing your lines and notes for a feature film, Keaton says she enjoyed the smoother approach to acting for her first clip. “It was just pure fun,” Keaton says. “All my life I’ve been an actress and had lines, and sometimes I was able to loosen them up a bit, but it was just completely loose and relaxed. Nobody ever [told me to do] anything, which made it so much fun.
No music video, even one with a heartwarming message, would be complete without a few looks. Eccentric style icon in her own rite, Keaton brought her own outfits (and hats!). “The outfits were indicative of my style because they belong to me,” Keaton laughs. “Some outfits come from my closet. I had wonderful things from Gucci. In one scene, we see Keaton and Bieber driving together in a convertible Corvette. Keaton wears an elegant Gucci checked coat, while Bieber wears an Aimé Leon Dore bomber jacket with Marni pants. “This coat is a real killer for me. It’s my favorite, ”Keaton says. “A coat is the best thing in the world for a person like me, which is a little strange. Let’s face it: I’m ready to accept the fact that I’m a little weird.
In another scene, Bieber buys Keaton a new outfit and takes him to town. Justin wears a vintage rugby top and Balenciaga jeans; Keaton wears his own chic Comme des Garçons coat with an extra-large belt (a Keaton signature). Even the darkest scenes also have a refined look. At the grandfather’s funeral, Bieber wears a Saint Laurent suit, while Keaton wears a black Louis Vuitton jacket. Through it all, Keaton wears his iconic dramatic hats, including his favorites of Nick Fouquet, Thom Browne and Mark Baron. “I don’t count my hats, but I kept all my old hats,” she says. “To me, a hat is a friend.”
Fabulous outfits aside, it’s clear that Keaton and Bieber have a natural connection in the clip. Keaton adds that the singer was a laid back collaborator. “He’s very charming,” she said. “He had to have his arm around me when we walked in the ocean … If I wanted to hug him, I would hug him. He was stuck with me. I kept thinking, “Oh, that poor guy. Surely, the fun was all Bieber’s.
