Did Princess Diana record herself singing the Phantom of the Opera?

In the fourth season of The crown, there’s a scene where Princess Diana (Emma Corrin) treats her husband, Prince Charles (Josh O’Connor), with an unexpected wedding anniversary gift: a video of herself singing “All I Ask “from the musical The Phantom of the Opera. Check-in is not a joke; she is dressed in an elaborate Christine Daaé costume on the set of the West End production with a full orchestra accompanying her. Diana is proud of the achievement, but Charles is not happy with it.

The late princess was known to be a huge fan of the musical and according to some accounts she really gave this gift to her husband. Annie Sulzberger, the chief researcher for The crown, Told The telegraph, “We didn’t make it up. There have been a number of [press] reports about it, enough that we felt comfortable including it in the series. It’s a story that existed before the script was written. ”

Sulzberger added that it is not known exactly what Diana did for her performance; she could have mimed on the song or just dancing to it, as some reports have suggested. “To minimize the number of witnesses, there is a chance that they played a recording,” she said.

But, a 1988 report in The Washington Post claims the recording includes Diana’s original voice.

For that, on the occasion of the seventh anniversary of the itch, she presented Prince Charles with a video of his current favorite musical, “The Phantom of the Opera”, and sang a song from the show to him, “ All I Ask of You. “And she did it simply by renting the show’s set at London’s West End Theater where he performs and having his movements lead by the show’s choreographer, Gillian Lynne. Diana didn’t settle for second best. The show’s composer, Andrew Lloyd Webber, was there to oversee his performance.

Webber later denied the claims of The telegraph. A few of the princess’ biographers – Penny Junor, Ingrid Seward and Simone Simmons – and her former bodyguard were also skeptical of the report.

Yet the official Ghost The Twitter account recognized the scene on the day of the Season 4 premiere and shared a photo of Diana meeting the cast. “’All I Ask of You’ has always been one of her favorite songs, with it once a private video on the Phantom stage. Corrin actually sang “All I Ask” during her audition for the role of Diana, and it was this impromptu performance (on a YouTube karaoke track of the song) that helped her win over the producers. Vulture reports.
