STATEN ISLAND, NY – Nearly a dozen new coronavirus (COVID-19) patients have been admitted in the past 24 hours to hospitals on Staten Island, with no new deaths reported.
On Saturday, 118 Islanders from Staten were being treated for COVID-19 at the three hospitals in the district – an increase of 11 since Saturday.
The totals reported on Sunday are the highest since May.
Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH) is currently caring for 102 patients at its two hospitals – 10 more than yesterday, SIUH spokesperson Christian Preston said on Sunday.
The University of Richmond Medical Center is caring for 16 patients, an increase of one since yesterday, according to RUMC spokesperson Alex Lutz.
NUMBER OF CASES
City officials are reporting 159 new coronaviruses across the borough on Sunday, after 186 new cases were reported a day earlier.
A total of 19,475 residents have shown positive results since testing began in March, according to the latest data available from the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
Across the city, a total of 278,956 New Yorkers have tested positive for the coronavirus, an increase of 1,398 new cases since Saturday.
From Friday to Saturday, 1,573 new cases were reported.
DEATH
No new deaths were reported on Sunday in Staten Island, after four were reported Thursday through Saturday, data showed.
Officials report that 1,118 residents of the district had succumbed to the virus on Sunday, of which 933 were “confirmed” and 185 were deemed “probable”, officials report.
A death is classified as “probable” if the person has had no known positive laboratory test for the virus, but has exhibited symptoms and has a death certificate indicating “COVID-19” or equivalent as the cause.
A source from the Department of Health said the figures reflect the totals at the time they are reported to the agency and not at the time of deaths and infections. All data is preliminary and subject to change.
Across the city, 24,194 deaths were recorded, including 19,537 “confirmed” and 4,652 “probable”.
INFECTION RATE
Although Staten Island is the least populated borough, it has the second highest infection rate, as the most recent tests show 4,090 positive cases per 100,000 population.
The Bronx has the highest infection rate, with 4,189 people testing positive per 100,000 population.
In contrast, Manhattan has the lowest rate, with 2,316 per 100,000 residents testing positive.
