Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Chapek tacitly defended the firing of The Mandalorian star Gina Carano on Tuesday, suggesting that she was let go not because of her conservative views, but for expressing views that went to against the “ universal ” values of society.
Chapek also denied that the decision was based on politics and dismissed claims that the entertainment juggernaut is “ left or right ”.
At Disney’s annual shareholders meeting, Chapek was asked about Carano’s dismissal last month for comparing the experience of Jews during the Holocaust to the American political climate.
A caller asked Chapek during the question-and-answer portion of the meeting whether Carano, 38, was chosen for openly speaking out about his conservative beliefs, as opposed to his left-wing co-star Pedro Pascal, who kept his job after comparing the holding of the ICE. centers in Nazi concentration camps.

Chapek, who did not mention Carano by name, replied that he did not see the $ 200 billion company as “ left or right ” and said Disney stood for “ universal values : values of respect, values of decency, values of integrity and values of inclusion ”.
He continued, “and we seek to have the content that we render reflecting the rich diversity of the world we live in. And I think it’s a world in which we should all live in harmony and at peace.”
Carano, a veteran MMA fighter who played recurring character Cara Dune on the popular Disney + show, was fired last month for the job.
Lucasfilm, which produced The Mandalorian, released a statement calling on Carano to “ disparage people on the basis of their cultural and religious identity ” and called his posts “ disgusting and unacceptable. ”

Carano came under fire after publishing that “Jews were beaten in the streets, not by Nazi soldiers but by their neighbors … even by children”.

Carano deleted the post, but it was shared widely online and prompted the #FireGinaCarano hashtag to be trending.
His supporters were quick to point out that Pascal, who plays the show’s main character, shared an image on his Twitter account in 2018 comparing ICE’s US detention centers to Nazi concentration camps.
Carano said in an interview with conservative commentator Ben Shapiro that Pascal could have gotten away with such an act because he was liberal, while she was being punished for being conservative.

“They were all over me and they looked at me like a hawk,” Carano said of the studio’s executives. “ And I watch other people on the same production and they can say whatever they want, and that’s where I had a problem. ”
Carano insisted that she was not the only one feeling ‘intimidated’ on the set of The Mandalorian because of their political beliefs, and claimed that other people who held conservative views were reluctant to express themselves.
“ I am not the only one who has been bullied by this company, and I know it so deeply, ” she told Shapiro.
