Before playing the music and turning on the lights, fans who choose to binge on “The Muppet Show” on Disney + will receive an “offensive content” warning before certain episodes. The classic series, which first aired in 1976, was released on the streaming service on Friday.

DISNEY + IS DARK AS FANS WAIT FOR LAST ‘WANDAVISION’ EPISODE

“This program includes negative representations and / or mistreatment of people or cultures. These stereotypes were wrong then and are wrong now. Rather than removing this content, we want to recognize its harmful impact, learn from it and spark conversation to together create a more inclusive future, ”the disclaimer states. “Disney is committed to creating stories with inspiring and ambitious themes that reflect the rich diversity of human experience around the world.”

Variety reported that the warning was added to a total of 18 episodes over the show’s five seasons, including those hosted by Jim Nabors, Joel Gray, Steve Martin, Peter Sellers, Cleo Laine, James Coco, Spike Milligan, Crystal Gayle, Kenny Rogers, Beverly Sills, Jonathan Winters, Alan Arkin, James Coburn, Joan Baez, Johnny Cash, Debbie Harry, Wally Boag and Marty Feldman. The warning appears at the start of these episodes for 12 seconds.

The tag was added to each video for a different reason. For example, during Cash’s epsiode, the legendary music star sings in front of a Confederate flag.

According to a statement from Disney’s Stories Matter initiative, the company is “revising our library and adding disclaimers to content that includes negative portrayals or mistreatment of people or cultures” in the part of an ongoing commitment to diversity and inclusion.

“Rather than removing this content, we see an opportunity to spark a conversation and open a dialogue about the story that concerns us all. We also want to recognize that some communities have been erased or forgotten altogether, and we are committed to give voice to their stories too, “the statement continued.” To that end, we have assembled a group of experts from outside our company to advise us in the evaluation of our content and ensure that it accurately represents our audience. By embracing each other’s stories, we embrace the possibilities. And that’s why we are determined to do our best to represent communities authentically. So not only do people see the best in themselves, but the world sees it too.

Other examples where Disney + viewers may see the content warnings are on classic films such as The Aristocrats, Dumbo, Peter Pan, and Swiss Family Robinson.
