On August 30, the Big Ten Conference sent the second Press release of the 2021 NCAA college football season. Here are the main plots of the release.
Everyone is back
College football’s opening weekend largely didn’t feature the Big Ten, but the coming week is packed with action. Rutgers University, Ohio State University and the University of Minnesota all start their seasons on Thursday, September 1, with the latter two schools going head-to-head. Friday is opening day for Northwestern, as they host the state of Michigan. On Saturday, the remaining nine teams will open the season or continue the season. The two conference clashes on Saturday are Penn State University versus the University of Wisconsin and Indiana University versus the University of Iowa.
Illinois beats Nebraska
In college football’s opening weekend, the University of Illinois beat the University of Nebraska 30-22 in the only Big Ten competition. It was the first game in Bret Bielema’s tenure at Illinois. It was the Illini’s first home win over Nebraska since 2015 and the conference’s first victory in an opener since 1984, when they beat the Wildcats.
Indiana and Iowa
One of the most exciting shows to watch in 2021 will be Indiana. The Hoosiers finished 6-1 in 2020 with his only flaw being the Big Ten Ohio State champion. The record set a record over .500 for the Hoosiers for a second straight season. It was the first time since 1987-88. Indiana meets Iowa in the opener, and the two teams are ranked in the Game’s Top 25, at 17th and 18th respectively. This is the first time the teams have met in the Top 25 since 1991, when Iowa won 38-21. Iowa play Iowa State’s No.7 in Game 2 of the season, making it the fourth time the Hawkeyes have opened the season against back-to-back ranked opponents.
Ohio state
Ohio State, the reigning Big Ten champion and college football playoff finalist, opens its season against Minnesota on Thursday night. The Buckeyes have won four straight Big Ten championships and have qualified for the CFP four times.
Minnesota
The Golden Gophers have always been very eye-catching in the opener, posting a 96-35-6 record. Minnesota have won four of their last five opening games and are 8-4 in the home opener since Huntington Bank Stadium opened in 2009.
College football playoff
The semifinal games in 2022 will be the Cotton and Orange Bowls, with each bowl making its third playoff appearance. Two number one seeds won the playoffs, three number two seeds won, two number four seeds won and a number three seed never won.
The ten major winners
120 All-Big Ten players are back in 2022, with 60 coming from each division. Defenseman Brandon Joseph and offensive lineman Peter Skoronski are back for the Wildcats.
Recap 2020
Four Big Ten teams finished in the Top 25 for the 2020 season, including Northwestern finishing at No. 10. Five Big Ten teams are in the Top 25 for the preseason poll, and the Wildcats face two at No. 12 from Wisconsin, not 18 from Iowa. Northwestern received votes but did not make the Top 25.
