Blair: There is probably only one quarterback on this roster (or currently in our universe) that I would want for ANY situation, and Allen isn’t that person at this point. But it is okay. Because I don’t drop him into an existing system or surround him with a list of poor talent. I build around it – which means I can just copy what Bills did.
Unlike the QBs in Allen’s class who struggled (or the vast majority of young QBs dropped out, for that matter), Allen played for the same head coach (Sean McDermott) and offensive coordinator (Brian Daboll) , with the same Managing Director (Brandon Beane) headed the front office for the three years of his career. Allen had time to grow and learn, while the McDermott-Daboll-Beane triad had time to implement a plan to amplify Allen’s strengths and downplay his weaknesses. It increases my confidence that Allen’s escape in 2020 is not a surprise out of nowhere, but rather a real bloomer, the best case scenario for developing a highly drafted quarterback in an era where he is. practically impossible to let someone learn on the bench. Consider how Allen’s steady improvement from year to year has kept pace with the increasing quality of his primary receiving goal each season (according to Next Generation stats):
2018: Zay Jones, 67 targets; 74.5 passer score targeting Jones
2019: John Brown, 110 targets; 103.7 passer rating targeting Brown
2020: Stefon Diggs, 166 targets; 115.4 passer rating when targeting Diggs
The Bills clearly give him what he needs to thrive, both in supporting talent and in coaching. There’s still a bit of chaotic energy in Allen’s play that could still make him a bit prone to rolling, but sign me up for three more seasons of a booming dynamo that can burn you with its legs and his arm.
