Do not activate the “Let’s go” button in the Windows 10 Settings app

If you’ve updated your copy of Windows 10 to a recent version, you may have noticed a new banner in the Settings app that appears at the top.

The banner displays basic account information and is also used by Microsoft for advertising / informational purposes. Most users should see a “Get the most out of Windows” notification at the top when they upgrade Windows 10 to a recent version of the operating system.

He says, “With a few quick selections, you’ll be on your way to fully enjoying the Microsoft experience.” There is a “let’s go” button which is prominently displayed, and a “skip for now” link which is less visible.

If this reminds you of the out-of-the-box operating system experience that shows up after upgrades, you are right.

Clicking on Let’s Go opens a full screen interface that looks like the operating system’s out-of-the-box experience. There are a few differences, but more on that later.

The start screen highlights areas that Microsoft suggests configuring to get the most out of operating systems.

On a test system, it was:

• Link your phone and PC
• Work seamlessly across all devices
• Get more with a Microsoft 365 subscription
• Protect your files in the cloud with OneDrive
• Improve your web browsing experience

You can exit the screen by clicking on “remind me in 3 days”, or continue the setup by clicking on continue.

Use recommended browser settings appears when you use a browser or browser settings other than the default. The screen suggests that you use the recommended browser settings, which involves making Microsoft Edge the default browser and Microsoft Bing the default search engine.

Since you’ve gone with different defaults, it’s very likely that you don’t want this to happen. You can ignore this, but Microsoft will harass you again in the future to make Edge the default.

Another screen that may be displayed to you is a full page ad for subscribing to Microsoft 365. You may qualify for a discount offer for the first year; I received a 50% offer for the first year on a test system.

You can select “no thanks” to skip this or next to start the registration process.

Once you are done, full screen mode is exited and you are returned to the Settings app. The banner at the top shows different information after you’ve completed the out-of-the-box experience, and these show the latest update check on Windows Update and a link to manage OneDrive.

Clicking the “let’s go” button opens a full screen interface that is in part an advertisement for Microsoft services, an attempt to trick you into using Microsoft products and services such as OneDrive or Microsoft Edge. The experience offers little value to most users, especially those who selected the skip option during the initial out-of-the-box experience several times.
