INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Younger generations without pre-existing conditions account for 97% of COVID-19 hospitalizations across the country.
The group is made up of people in their 30s, 40s and 50s. And the majority did not have the vaccine.
But while being young and leading a healthy lifestyle can prevent a person from contracting chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, or certain cancers, the two are by no means protective shields against the coronavirus.
The virus, they say, doesn’t care about anyone. He cares about his own survival. And it will continue to survive and mutate into more infectious strains if vaccination rates remain at a standstill.
News 8 spoke with Dr Ram Yeleti, Chief Medical Officer of Community Health. Yeleti has a message for those who are not vaccinated because they are young and healthy, they are immune to infections. But with the delta variant dominating, he says, no one is spared serious infection, complications and death.
“The Delta variant is really unlike anything else we’ve seen in the last 18 months,” Yeleti said. “It’s so contagious that it infects anyone and everyone. The vast majority of our patients are younger and have no co-morbidities or health problems. So we see people that we’ve never seen before and they get very, very sick. “
When the virus infects a person who has not been vaccinated, their immune system goes into a state of chaos. Their body does not recognize the infectious agent that is circulating. Cells designed to destroy COVID-19 end up doing the opposite, leading to inflammation and organ failure. However, when a person is vaccinated, the body immediately recognizes the foreign agent and knows exactly how to overcome the infection.
Yeleti goes on to say that this is clearly an unvaccinated pandemic. Almost always all the people he sees who are on ventilators or whose prognosis seems grim are the ones who have not been vaccinated.
